What is Project-Based Learning?

According to the Buck Institute for Education (BIE), in Project Based Learning (PBL), students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking).

About PBL

DRIVING QUESTION

How can we, as NCSD Teachers, develop
a PBL culture for our classrooms?

SUPPORTING QUESTION

How can we plan effective PBL Units to engage our learners and
achieve academic growth in a global community?

OUR JOURNEY

Novi Community Schools District Project Based Learning Cohort began its journey in August 2013.  This website showcases that journey and the learning by teachers and students.  Through their reflections and the scope of each unit developed in the framework of the 8 Essential Elements of PBL, it becomes evident that PBL is rigorous not only for the students but for the teacher as well.  PBL is a mind shift.

These PBL Units are based on the Common Core State Standards.  The first PBL units are marked with a gold star.  Were they engaging and worthwhile for the students?  Yes.  Were these units perfect? No. They were the starting point for our teachers. With each unit, teachers reflected and gained knowledge about the art and science of  PBL and a deeper understanding of content.
Again, this is their journey of learning.
PBL is a growth mindset.
